How Long Does A Roof Removal Take?

Roof Replacement

roof removal

Living in South Florida, roofs can take a beating from the elements: particularly during hurricane season. If you notice missing shingles on your roof, or roof leaks through the ceiling, it could be signs that your roof needs to be replaced. This process involves removing the current roof first, which can be a lengthy process depending on the size and condition of the original roof, the materials used, and more.

The experienced roofing contractors at ABC Roofing explain what you can expect during a roof removal in South Florida.

Roof Removal

How Long Can A Roof Removal Take?

The exact amount of time a roof removal takes can’t be guaranteed, as there are several factors involved:

Size Of Your Home

Not surprisingly, the roof of a smaller home will take less time to remove than the roof of a larger home. A standard-sized, one-story house, for example, will take most of the day depending on the time of year, whereas a larger home may take all day, and at times an additional day.

Materials Being Removed

Some materials have a more complex removal process than others, the amount of removal time could depend on whether your roof is composed of shingles, metal, tile, etc.

Amount Of Cleanup And Debris

The roof removal process is one thing; cleanup at the end is another. Responsible roofing contractors won’t leave a mess behind for the homeowners to deal with. Some materials, such as clay or slate shingles, are heavy and will require more time to remove.

Condition Of The Existing Roof

A roof in better condition will be a much faster job than one that isn’t; the latter requires more preparation and possibly more workers. It also means that more materials will need to be replaced: the decking, underlayment, flashing, and more. This is all to maintain the structural integrity of the roof, keeping your home and everything in it safe and protected from the elements.

What To Expect During A Roof Removal

Here is what you can expect on that big day:

Preparing And Protecting Your Property

Roof removal can be messy and precautions should be taken to protect your property by covering walls, plants, decor, patio furniture, etc with a tarp, keeping your yard safe from damage. Homeowners should also take care to keep children and pets inside, out of the way of workers. This keeps everyone safe and will help the removal process go more efficiently. Also be aware that young children, older folks, and pets may be affected by the noise that is generated by the roof removal and nailing of the materials

Carefully Removing The Existing Roof

Once the surrounding property is protected, your roofing contractor will begin the removal process. This allows a contractor to inspect the decking and flashing underneath before proceeding with the replacement.

Conducting A Thorough Inspection

Every job begins and ends with an inspection. Damaged materials are removed and replaced to maintain the integrity of the structure underneath

Preparing The Roof Surface

Once the initial inspection is complete, and the roof is deemed in good enough condition to safely work on, the contractors will clean the surface and replace any damaged wood, install a drip edge around the perimeter, and prepare the deck for the new underlayment.

Installing The New Roof

Once the roof underlayment is complete, an inspection of some kind will be obtained (depending on the local code body), once that is secured, the shingles, tile, and metal will be installed.

Cleaning Up And Final Inspection

Your roofing contractors should leave the property just as they found it and a final inspection of the roof conducted. This ensures nothing was left undone, and no damages were overlooked or incurred during the process.

Roof leak repair. The entire process was quite excellent...from Patrick and the estimate (and he kept us informed of work progress) to the workers who completed the repair, and they were polite and efficient. We will certainly consider ABC again if/when another roofing issue arises.

I recently had the pleasure of working with ABC Roofing in Coral Springs, FL, to replace my roof, which had served me well for 28 years. While the roof itself was still in good condition, my insurance rates had become unmanageable due to its age. After reviewing previous permits, I discovered that ABC Roofing had completed the original installation, prompting me to seek their services once again. I obtained estimates from several companies, and I found that ABC Roofing offered the most competitive pricing, along with exceptional service and a hassle-free experience. I was particularly impressed by the professionalism of the crew during the tear-off and installation process; they were both quick and efficient. The most commendable aspect was their meticulous cleanup—there was no debris left behind, and my landscaping remained undisturbed. My positive experience led me to hire ABC Gutters for my home's gutter installation as well. Once again, I enjoyed a seamless experience characterized by excellent customer service and great pricing. I highly recommend reaching out to Joe, the estimator, for an accurate and fair estimate. ABC Roofing and ABC Gutters have exceeded my expectations, and I am grateful for their outstanding work.

We contracted with ABC Roofing Corp to install a standing seam metal roof for us. Then to install new gutters as well. We reached out to them as one of the three companies for estimates as we had been able to observe their work on several other homes in our neighborhood. The roof has been complete now for about four weeks and we are very pleased. The roof panels are from Dynamic Metals. We selected a light color to match our house which also gave us a very high solar reflectivity index (SRI). We have already noticed the lower temperature in the house over that time with several days’ temperatures approaching the high 90s. The gutter color was selected to match the roof and looks great. Overall the process went very well. Joe Simms was well prepared when he came out to take information for our estimate having already determined the roof area. We were still considering whether to do a shingle re-roof or to go with a metal roof. He took time to explain each step of the process for both options including the permitting, inspections, materials to be used, work crews, site needs, payment terms, etc. Working with the office staff was quite pleasant, including Hanna and Jamie, who explained things when we had questions or we called to follow-up on issues or next steps. The work crews worked well together and worked hard. Once the permit was approved, the tear-off / dry-in work, inspections, metal panel and accessories fabrication / delivery and the metal panel installation proceeded in fairly quick order. From the tear-off to metal panels fully installed was 13 days. (See comments below about painting.) At the completion of work on each day of work, the area around the house and roof was cleaned of debris and scrap material. We have found a few nails, screws and tin tags in the bushes around the house but none in the driveway. There were a few things that could have been better, mainly some scheduling and communication from or within ABC Roofing. As an example, we did not always get notice that a work crew was coming or materials were being delivered. We did get advance notice of the tear-off / dry-in work. And for the delivery / fabrication of the metal panels. But the day after that we were surprised by a delivery of materials and were not home to receive and safeguard it in our garage. The person making the delivery had to wait for us. Then he was the one that told us that the metal panel installation was going to start later that same day. As an example of communication within ABC Roofing, from the start they were made aware that one section of our roof that needed different nails and screws due to an exposed inside ceiling in that area. The tear-off / dry-in crew were made aware and had the right materials, e.g. longer nails. However, when the metal panel installation crew started to put down the fire retardant layer over that same area of the roof, they seemed confused. This was even after I had raised the issue with one of the crew members on an earlier work day and suggested that they get guidance from the ABC Roofing foreman. It became evident that this hadn’t happened when I observed the crew tearing off the already installed layers of fire retardant and two layers of 30# felt to see what was underneath when someone within ABC Roofing could have passed along this information before hand. This was disappointing considering how well so much of the rest of the job went. As an example of scheduling, the fascia wood that had to be replaced during the tear-off / dry-in work was supposed to be painted before the metal panel installation started. Instead it wasn't done until all the metal panels were fully installed. Since there was several sections of the replaced fascia that could only be reached while standing on the new metal panels, this became a bit tricky and took parts of two days to finish. Overall we are quite satisfied with our replacement roof. We would recommend ABC Roofing Corp to anyone getting a re-roof of either an asphalt shingle or a metal roof. We are glad we selected them for our roofing work.
